If you're unsure how to pick a down jacket, don’t worry! Here’s a simple way to ensure you get the best quality without being tricked.
Step 1: Choose the Filling
White goose down > white duck down > gray duck down.
The price typically decreases in that order. Goose down is the warmest, while duck down has a slight odor that you should be aware of.
Step 2: Check the Standards
Since April 1, 2021, the new GB/T14272-2021 standard has been in effect. Look for the last four digits on the label. If they read "2021," it meets the new standards. If it reads "2011," proceed with caution!
Step 3: Look at the Down Content
Remember, the new standard focuses on the content of down! Aim for at least 85% down content—higher is better, with 90-95% being ideal.
⚠️ Avoid any jackets with 90% filling that uses white duck down; they're usually not worth it!
Step 4: Check the Fill Weight
Different sizes will have different fill weights. This is usually listed in a table format on the care label:
100g: Lightweight down, good for milder climates.
100-200g: Medium thickness, suitable for temperate areas.
200g+: Thick down, perfect for colder regions.
Step 5: Look at the Loft
Most jackets will have a loft ranging from 400-900. The higher the loft, the better the insulation and warmth!
